40 ft Storage Containers for Rent
Thousands of in-stock 40ft storage containers for rent or lease — secure, weatherproof and delivered fast. New, used and refurbished units on flexible terms, delivered and picked up across Southern California.
Secure storage without the big up-front cost
Shipping Container Depot offers 40ft storage containers for rent to businesses that need secure, weatherproof storage. Renting lets you minimize cost and avoid the large starting capital of buying a container outright — so you can enjoy the benefits of a container and reinvest the savings elsewhere. When you need a secure space for a limited time, renting is the practical option.
Renting vs. buying a shipping container
Not sure whether to rent or buy? It usually comes down to how long you need it and your budget. Here is a quick side-by-side.
| Consideration | Rent | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short-term, time-bound projects | Long-term or permanent use |
| Up-front cost | Low — no large capital outlay | Higher one-time investment |
| Ideal term | Around one year or less | Pays off over several years |
| End of use | We collect it — nothing to resell | You resell or store the unit |
| Flexibility | Swap, upgrade or return anytime | Fixed asset you own |
Available 40ft containers for rent
Choose the condition grade that fits your project and budget. Every grade is wind and water tight and available on flexible rental terms.
New / One-Trip
Used for only a single voyage then resold — cargo-worthy, wind and water tight, with no dents or rust. The premium rental for container homes, offices and anywhere pristine condition matters. Typically 1–2 years old.
Used – Cargo Worthy
A cheaper, viable alternative to new. Around 7–10 years old with verified structural integrity, inspectable by marine surveyors, and still fit for international shipments. A great-value rental in good appearance.
Used – Wind & Water Tight
The most economical option to lease. ISO certified with a 3-year weather-tight guarantee despite being older units (around 10–13 years). Includes free on-site container repair and replacement for the term of your lease.
40ft rental container dimensions
We rent standard 40ft and 40ft high-cube containers. Check the dimensions to find the right fit for your space and cargo.
General 40’ Container
The standard 40ft box — ideal for general storage, tools, inventory and equipment on flexible rental terms.
40’ High Cube Container
An extra foot of interior height for oversized cargo or stacking — the same 40ft footprint with more vertical room.

40ft rental questions
Should I rent or buy a 40ft container?
Renting is usually the better choice if you need the container for around a year or less, for a time-bound project, or if you may want to swap or return it. Buying makes more sense for long-term or permanent use where the one-time cost pays off over several years.
What condition are your rental containers in?
We rent new/one-trip, cargo-worthy and wind-and-water-tight 40ft containers. All grades are wind and water tight; WWT leases include a 3-year weather-tight guarantee plus free on-site repair and replacement.
How long can I rent a 40ft container for?
Rental terms are flexible — short or long. We’ll tailor the term to your project. If you find you need it longer, we can extend, and if you no longer need it, we simply collect it.
Do you deliver and pick up the rental?
Yes. We deliver by tilt-bed, low-bed or flatbed trailer, or by chassis, and collect the container at the end of your term. Plan for 60 ft to 80 ft of clear space on site, and you may need a forklift ready.
Can I modify a rented container?
Yes. We can add insulation, electrical, HVAC, partitions, doors, windows, custom paint and more to your rental. See our container modifications for options.
Do you rent 40ft containers across Los Angeles and California?
Yes. We serve the greater Los Angeles area and deliver rentals statewide across Southern California. Contact us to confirm availability for your location.
