On the way back from picking up parts we finally stopped by since we drive past it a lot. Solid spot — the guy working was super helpful and got us in and out quick with the container we needed. Prices seemed fair compared to what everyone else charges online.

Worked over a weekend to get us a modified shipping container ahead of schedule at a reasonable price. This company is the best!

Where you can put a container in California

There is no single answer for California, and any supplier who gives you one has not checked. The state does not regulate shipping containers on private property — your city does, or your county if you are in an unincorporated area. Four jurisdictions we deliver to every week illustrate how far apart they can be.

RuleWhat it means for you
Who writes the ruleYour city or, if you are unincorporated, your county — California has no statewide container ordinance
City of Los AngelesUse of Land Permit; only on lots with no residential use; one per 5,000 sq ft
Unincorporated LA CountyMiscellaneous Permit per container, with Regional Planning and Fire sign-off; one per parcel
Long BeachWritten rules with size, setback and zone limits; industrial by right, other zones need review
PasadenaNo container-specific ordinance for private property — the building permit threshold applies instead
What is statewideVehicle Code limits: loads over 14 ft high need review, and posted truck routes bind the delivery truck

That spread is real. In the City of Los Angeles a container is not allowed on a lot with residential use at all. Twelve miles away in Pasadena there is no container-specific ordinance to comply with. In unincorporated California County you need a permit per container with two departments signing off first. Same containers, same truck, three completely different processes.

What is consistent statewide is the driving. Vehicle Code height limits mean a 9 ft 6 in high-cube rides close to the legal ceiling, posted truck routes bind where a loaded truck may go, and grade and street width decide whether a tilt-bed can set down at all. Tell us the delivery address when you ask for a quote and we will tell you which set of rules you are under before you commit.

Container delivery in California

We are based in Pasadena and run our own trucks, so where we deliver is a question of driving distance rather than a broker’s network.

Southern California is our core: California and the whole San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay, Orange County, the Inland Empire, Ventura County and out to Bakersfield. Those runs are routine and usually go out within 3–7 business days of the order.

  • Based in Pasadena — our own trucks statewide
  • SoCal in 3–7 business days
  • NorCal on a longer lead time
  • We confirm access before we confirm the date

We also serve Northern California cities — San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Stockton and Fremont — on a longer lead time. If you are up there, ask early rather than late; scheduling is the constraint, not availability.

Either way the same two questions decide the delivery: can a truck of this length reach the address, and is there room to set the container down where you want it. Send us the address with your quote request and we will answer both before you commit to a date.

FAQ

California container questions, answered

+How can I buy a shipping container in California, California?
Contact us with the size, condition, and delivery ZIP and we will price it in one call. Shipping Container Depot sells new (one-trip), used, and refurbished containers in every standard size, plus high cubes and specialty units, delivered across California on our own fleet.
+How fast can you deliver a container in California?
California is within our core service area, so delivery is usually quick and we can coordinate placement in advance. Timing depends on the size and condition you need and on site access. We give same-day quotes and confirm the window at that time.
+Can you deliver to my part of California?
Across Southern California, usually yes — and we will tell you before delivery day if not. The two things that decide it are the same everywhere: whether a truck of this length can reach the address, and whether there is room to set the container down where you want it. Narrow hillside streets, steep driveways and low branches are the usual culprits. Northern California cities are on a longer lead time, so ask early. Send the address with your quote request and we will confirm access before you commit to a date.
+What size container is best for warehouse expansion?
For on-site warehouse overflow, 40ft units give the most storage per dollar and 40ft high cubes add a foot of interior height, which matters if you are racking or moving palletised goods with a forklift. 20ft units place far more easily on constrained industrial lots. If you tell us the footprint you have available we will tell you what actually fits.
+How much are shipping containers in California?
Prices depend on size, condition, and delivery distance, and generally run between $1,400 and $7,000. One-trip units are the most expensive: roughly $5,000–$6,000 for a 20ft and $6,500–$7,000 for a 40ft. Used containers run about $1,200–$2,500 for a 20ft and $2,600–$3,300 for a 40ft. Rentals start around $100 per month for a 20ft and $200 per month for a 40ft.
+Do I need a permit to place a shipping container in California?
That depends entirely on where you are, because California has no statewide container ordinance. Your city writes the rule, or your county if you are in an unincorporated area. To show how wide the spread is: the City of Los Angeles only allows a container on a lot with no residential use at all; unincorporated Los Angeles County requires a permit for each container with two departments signing off first; Pasadena has no container-specific ordinance for private property. Tell us the delivery address and we will tell you which set of rules applies before you order — and our city pages cover the local detail for the areas we serve most.
+Do you deliver outside the city to Altadena, Sierra Madre, South California and Arcadia?
Yes. Altadena is immediately north of us and we run there constantly. We also cover Sierra Madre, South California, San Marino, Arcadia, Glendale and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley on the same trucks and the same schedule.
+How much room do you need to deliver a 40ft container?
A 40ft container on a tilt-bed truck needs roughly 100 feet of straight clearance to unload, plus reasonably level ground and overhead clearance. No forklift or crane is required — the truck sets it down for you. If you are not sure the site works, call us and we will walk it with you over the phone before scheduling.

We also deliver to: Long Beach, Torrance, Santa Monica and Pasadena.
