New / One-Trip Shipping Containers (Best Condition)

Our new single trip ISO shipping containers are the only ones to be considered “new” by industry standards. The term and condition known as “single trip” or “one trip” container not only pertains to the condition and grade of the container unit but is also defined through the course of having been on only “one/single” voyage from its manufactured point of origin overseas to one of our distribution points in the US and made available for sale. The purchasing year of any new single trip / one trip container unit will always reflect the same manufactured year guaranteed. New single trip containers are the ideal choice when choosing container conditions for constructing shipping container homes.

Used Cargo Worthy Shipping Containers – Certified Grade

Our used cargo worthy condition ISO shipping containers for sale are approximately 7 – 10 years in age. Slightly newer than our used wind & water tight grade shipping containers these units are ideal for customers who prefer a slightly younger used storage container as an alternative to the purchase of a new single trip or used premium IICL 5 condition container. In addition to being younger in age a cargo worthy container can also be seen more aesthetically pleasing to some in comparison to our wind & water tight grade storage containers. These units can and also often are inspected and certified by a marine surveyor to ensure structural integrity for overseas shipments or surveyed for simple peace of mind that your container will last structurally through out the years for just about any purpose.

Used Refurbished / Reconditioned Containers

Refurbished or reconditioned shipping containers have been professionally restored to like-new condition. The process typically includes: wire brushing or sandblasting to remove rust, applying industrial-grade rust-inhibiting primer, painting with enamel or epoxy topcoat, replacing worn floor boards, and repairing damaged door seals and locking bars.

A properly refurbished container looks significantly better than a standard used WWT unit and costs less than a new one-trip container. They’re popular for retail, office, and residential projects where appearance matters but buying new isn’t in the budget.

What Refurbished Means — and What It Doesn’t

Refurbished refers to the exterior and structural restoration only. Refurbished containers are NOT:

  • Brand new steel (the underlying container is still a used vessel)
  • Certified cargo-worthy (CW certification applies to structural integrity, not cosmetics)
  • Guaranteed odor-free (prior cargo may have left residual smell — relevant for food storage)

If you need guaranteed clean interior conditions, a new one-trip container is the right choice.

Refurbished vs. WWT: Which Should You Buy?

Buy refurbished if: you need a visually presentable container for a conversion, storefront, or location where the container will be visible to customers or neighbors. The higher paint quality and restored floor boards make a significant difference in finished appearance.

Buy WWT if: the container will be used for purely utilitarian storage and appearance is not a factor. WWT units cost less and are more widely available.

Frequently Asked Questions About Container Conditions

What is the most common container condition sold?

Wind and Water Tight (WWT) used containers are the most commonly purchased condition. They offer a balance of affordability and functionality — structurally sound, weather-tight, and priced below cargo-worthy or new units.

What does “one-trip” mean for a shipping container?

A one-trip container made one ocean voyage carrying factory goods from Asia before being purchased by a dealer. They arrive in near-new condition with minimal wear. One-trip containers cost more than standard used containers but significantly less than factory-new units.

Can I get a cargo worthy container for storage?

Yes, but you’ll pay a premium that may not be necessary for stationary storage. Cargo worthy certification matters when a container will be shipped internationally. For ground-level storage, a WWT container is almost always sufficient and more cost-effective.

How do I know what condition my container is in?

We grade and photograph every container before sale. When you request a quote, we send you actual photos of the specific unit — not stock images. You know exactly what you’re getting before any money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a one-trip shipping container?

A one-trip container has made a single voyage from its manufacturing point overseas to the US. It is considered new by industry standards and always reflects the current purchase year as its manufacturing year — the highest quality available.

What does WWT mean for shipping containers?

WWT stands for Wind & Water Tight. These certified used containers (typically 10–13 years old) keep out wind and water. Shipping Container Depot includes a 3-year weather tight guarantee on all WWT purchases.

What is a cargo worthy shipping container?

Cargo worthy containers are approximately 7–10 years old and structurally certified for overseas shipment. They can be inspected by a marine surveyor for peace of mind on long-term structural integrity.

Is one-trip the same as new?

Yes. In the shipping container industry, “one-trip” and “new” mean the same thing. The container was manufactured overseas, used for one voyage to the US, and is now available for purchase in like-new condition.
