New, used & refurbished containers for sale in Pasadena

Pasadena sits about 12 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, at the junction of the 210 and the 134. Shipping Container Depot has supplied new one-trip and used cargo-worthy containers across the city since 2010 — single 20 ft units behind a Craftsman bungalow, and multi-container setups on commercial sites.

Whether you are adding storage behind a business off Colorado Boulevard, staging a renovation in one of the landmark districts, or setting up a jobsite in the northwest of the city, we deliver the container and place it where you want it.

All containers are ISO-certified and wind & water tight. Same-day quotes, and we tell you up front whether your street is on Pasadena’s truck route map or needs a different approach.

On the way back from picking up parts we finally stopped by since we drive past it a lot. Solid spot — the guy working was super helpful and got us in and out quick with the container we needed. Prices seemed fair compared to what everyone else charges online.

Worked over a weekend to get us a modified shipping container ahead of schedule at a reasonable price. This company is the best!

Where you can put a container in Pasadena

Pasadena is unusual. We could not find a single section of the Pasadena Municipal Code that specifically regulates a shipping container on private property. Chapter 17.50 covers outdoor storage and Chapter 14.50 lists 35 nuisance conditions — containers appear in neither. If a supplier quotes you a Pasadena code section that bans containers in residential zones, ask them to cite it.

RuleWhat Pasadena requires
Container on private propertyNo section of the Pasadena Municipal Code regulates it specifically
Building permitDetached accessory structures are exempt only up to 120 sq ft — a 20 ft container is about 160 sq ft
Container placed in the streetPublic Works permit required — “Storage Container (POD) on the Street”
Outdoor storage, commercial zonesPMC 17.50.180 — allowed by right in CD, CG and CL; screening wall required
Construction sitesPMC 17.61.040 — contractors’ construction yards up to 12 months
Truck accessPMC 10.52 — vehicles over 6,000 lb only on designated truck routes

What does apply is the building permit threshold. Pasadena exempts detached accessory structures up to 120 square feet. A 10 ft container is roughly 80 sq ft and sits under that line; a 20 ft container is roughly 160 sq ft and does not. The city has not published a determination on whether a container counts as an accessory structure, so confirm with Building & Safety before placing a 20 ft or 40 ft unit.

Street placement is the one case where a permit is definitely required. Public Works issues a “Storage Container (POD) on the Street” permit at 175 N Garfield Ave, or by phone at 626-744-4195. Rules change — confirm current requirements with the city before delivery day.

Container delivery in Pasadena

Pasadena delivery has one constraint most suppliers never mention: our truck cannot take the 110.

Caltrans bans commercial vehicles over 6,000 pounds on State Route 110, the Arroyo Seco Parkway, for the entire 8.2-mile run from the 101 up to Glenarm Street in Pasadena. A loaded container truck coming from downtown Los Angeles has to route around it, via I-210 or SR-134. That is a routing decision, not an excuse, and it is already built into how we schedule Pasadena runs.

  • About 12 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles
  • Reached via I-210 and SR-134 — not the 110
  • Our own trucks and drivers, no third-party carrier
  • Same crew covers Altadena and the San Gabriel Valley

Inside the city, Pasadena Municipal Code Chapter 10.52 keeps vehicles over 6,000 pounds on designated truck routes — Arroyo Parkway, Fair Oaks Avenue, Foothill Boulevard, Lake Avenue, Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, Walnut Street and a few others. A delivery truck may leave a truck route only by the most direct path to your address.

Two more things worth knowing: the 710 north stub was relinquished to the City of Pasadena in August 2022 and is no longer a through freeway, and hillside streets in the north of the city can be tight for a tilt-bed. Send us the address with your quote request and we will tell you before delivery day whether the truck fits.

FAQ

Pasadena container questions, answered

+How can I buy a shipping container in Pasadena, California?
Contact us with the size, condition, and delivery ZIP and we will price it in one call. Shipping Container Depot sells new (one-trip), used, and refurbished containers in every standard size, plus high cubes and specialty units, delivered across Pasadena on our own fleet.
+How fast can you deliver a container in Pasadena?
Pasadena is within our core service area, so delivery is usually quick and we can coordinate placement in advance. Timing depends on the size and condition you need and on site access. We give same-day quotes and confirm the window at that time.
+Can your truck reach my street in Pasadena?
Usually yes, but it is worth checking first. Caltrans bans commercial vehicles over 6,000 pounds on the 110 all the way up to Glenarm Street, so we come in on the 210 or the 134 instead. Inside the city, Pasadena Municipal Code Chapter 10.52 keeps heavy trucks on designated truck routes — Arroyo Parkway, Fair Oaks, Foothill, Lake, Sierra Madre Villa, Walnut and a few others — and we leave those only by the most direct route to your address. Hillside streets in the north can be tight for a tilt-bed. Send the address with your quote request and we will confirm before delivery day.
+What size container is best for warehouse expansion?
For on-site warehouse overflow, 40ft units give the most storage per dollar and 40ft high cubes add a foot of interior height, which matters if you are racking or moving palletised goods with a forklift. 20ft units place far more easily on constrained industrial lots. If you tell us the footprint you have available we will tell you what actually fits.
+How much are shipping containers in Pasadena?
Prices depend on size, condition, and delivery distance, and generally run between $1,400 and $7,000. One-trip units are the most expensive: roughly $5,000–$6,000 for a 20ft and $6,500–$7,000 for a 40ft. Used containers run about $1,200–$2,500 for a 20ft and $2,600–$3,300 for a 40ft. Rentals start around $100 per month for a 20ft and $200 per month for a 40ft.
+Do I need a permit to place a shipping container in Pasadena?
For private property, probably not. We could not find any section of the Pasadena Municipal Code that specifically regulates a shipping container on private property. What does apply is the building permit threshold: Pasadena exempts detached accessory structures up to 120 square feet, and a 20 ft container is about 160 sq ft, so confirm with Building & Safety before placing a 20 ft or 40 ft unit. In commercial zones, PMC 17.50.180 allows outdoor storage by right in CD, CG and CL but requires screening. Placing a container in the street is different — that needs a Public Works permit. Rules change, so confirm with the city before delivery.
+Do you deliver outside the city to Altadena, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena and Arcadia?
Yes. Altadena is immediately north of us and we run there constantly. We also cover Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Glendale and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley on the same trucks and the same schedule.
+How much room do you need to deliver a 40ft container?
A 40ft container on a tilt-bed truck needs roughly 100 feet of straight clearance to unload, plus reasonably level ground and overhead clearance. No forklift or crane is required — the truck sets it down for you. If you are not sure the site works, call us and we will walk it with you over the phone before scheduling.

We also deliver to: Burbank, Santa Clarita and Los Angeles. Also Altadena and La Crescenta. Also Los Angeles. Statewide: California.
