Shipping containers for sale in Bakersfield, CA — new, used & conex

Delivered on our own trucks across Kern County, often within 48 hours. Bakersfield is one of the few cities with a whole chapter of code on containers — including an 8-foot height cap that a standard 8′6″ container does not meet. We explain that below rather than after delivery.

New, used & refurbished containers for sale in Bakersfield

Bakersfield’s oil and energy sectors, agricultural operations, and heavy industry rely on industrial-grade containers for equipment storage and on-site supply management. Shipping Container Depot serves Bakersfield’s industrial market with durable, ISO-certified containers—often available within 48 hours.

Whether you’re managing oil industry operations, agricultural equipment storage, or heavy-equipment staging, we deliver robust, weatherproof containers optimized for industrial use. Our Bakersfield expertise includes energy-sector specifications, agricultural-supply coordination, and rapid deployment.

Looking for a 20ft container or a 40-footer? Bakersfield buyers most often take a 20ft unit for farm and shop storage, or a 40ft for long-term equipment protection under cover. All containers meet ISO standards, wind and water tight units are in stock, and pricing depends on grade and delivery distance. Same-day quotes — tell us the job and we’ll tell you which size actually fits it.

On the way back from picking up parts we finally stopped by since we drive past it a lot. Solid spot — the guy working was super helpful and got us in and out quick with the container we needed. Prices seemed fair compared to what everyone else charges online.

Worked over a weekend to get us a modified shipping container ahead of schedule at a reasonable price. This company is the best!

Where you can put a container in Bakersfield

Bakersfield is one of the very few California cities with an entire chapter of its municipal code devoted to this exact question — Chapter 17.57, Metal Storage Containers. The limits are specific, and they are stricter than most buyers expect.

RuleWhat the city requires
Maximum area320 square feet
Maximum height8 feet
StackingProhibited
Setback in M zones30 feet from any property line abutting a public or private street
C-1, C-2 and P.C.D. zonesNot permitted in any front yard or street side yard
Foundation4-inch concrete slab, or 3-inch asphalt over a 2-inch aggregate base
Colour and screeningNeutral, earth-tone, site-compatible colour, screened so it is not visible from public streets
OccupancyNo office, no residence, no human occupancy
Residential and other zonesConditional use permit required, with container area no more than 1:50 of lot area

How many you can have is also capped: one container on a commercial lot under half an acre, two at half an acre or more; industrial lots scale from one to four by size. Containers tied to an active building permit are allowed in any zone for up to 24 months, and after fire, flood or earthquake damage the building director can approve placement in any zone for 90 days. Between October 1 and January 1 the planning director can approve extra containers for seasonal retail.

The number worth pausing on is the 8-foot height cap. A standard shipping container is 8 ft 6 in tall and a high cube is 9 ft 6 in — read literally, neither fits under Chapter 17.57. We are not going to pretend that ambiguity does not exist. Call Bakersfield Planning with your parcel and your intended zone before you order, and we will hold your container until you have an answer.

Container delivery in Bakersfield

Bakersfield deliveries are usually the straightforward kind — wide roads, big lots, room to work. The problems here are almost never about space. They are about what is under the truck.

  • Farm and ranch parcels — Kern County agriculture is a $7.9 billion industry and most of our Bakersfield deliveries land on working ground. Irrigation mains, septic fields and buried drip lines do not announce themselves. Tell us what is under the drop spot before the truck arrives.
  • Soft ground and disc-ploughed dirt — a loaded truck weighs far more than the tractor that crossed that field last week. After winter rain, a spot that looks solid will not be.
  • Oilfield and industrial yards — compacted, level and built for heavy vehicles. These are the easy ones.
  • Older downtown lots and alleys — narrow rear access and overhead service drops. Worth a photo before you order.
  • Summer heat — utility lines sag measurably in July and August. The clearance you measured in February is not the clearance you have in August.

You need roughly 60 feet of straight clear run for a 20ft and 100–120 feet for a 40ft, plus 14 feet of overhead clearance the whole way in. Our full container delivery guide covers site prep, the three ways a container comes off a truck, and the eight things that most often go wrong on the day.

Delivery is quoted to your address before you commit, not added on afterwards. Send a photo of the route in and the drop spot and we will tell you which truck is coming.

FAQ

Bakersfield container questions, answered

+How fast can you get a container to Bakersfield?
Bakersfield is a straight run up the 5 from our Los Angeles depot, so units are often on site within 48 hours. Remote lease roads and sites needing access coordination can take longer. Quotes come back the same day with the delivery window confirmed.
+Should I buy a 20ft or a 40ft container?
For farm and shop storage a 20ft unit is usually the right buy — it places on a smaller pad, needs less clearance to unload, and holds more than most people expect. Go to 40ft when you are storing long equipment, implements, or pallet loads and want it all under one roof rather than split across two boxes. A 40ft high cube adds a foot of interior height, which matters if you are stacking or working inside it. Tell us what is going in and we will tell you which one you actually need.
+Are these containers suitable for oilfield and heavy industrial sites?
Yes for equipment, tooling, parts, and supply storage — that is the bulk of what we deliver into Kern County. Containers are Corten steel, wind and water tight, and lock down properly on remote sites. If you need something beyond general storage, tell us the specific requirement up front so we can confirm what we can and cannot supply before you order.
+How do containers hold up to Bakersfield heat and dust?
Well, provided you vent them. A sealed steel box in a Kern County summer will hold serious heat and then draw moisture as it cools overnight, which is what rusts tools and spoils supplies. Passive vents on opposing walls cover most storage; a turbine fan moves considerably more air. Door seals also matter more here than on the coast — dust finds every gap, and a properly sealing set of doors is worth checking at delivery.
+Can you deliver onto an unpaved lease road or ranch track?
Often, yes. A tilt-bed truck needs roughly 100 feet of straight clearance to unload and firm enough ground not to sink — on unpaved Kern County sites, ground firmness usually matters more than space. Tell us the access route and surface and we will tell you before delivery day whether the truck makes it in.
+How much are shipping containers in Bakersfield?
Expect $1,400 to $7,000 depending on size, condition, and delivery distance. One-trip units run roughly $5,000–$6,000 for a 20ft and $6,500–$7,000 for a 40ft. Used containers run about $1,200–$2,500 for a 20ft and $2,600–$3,300 for a 40ft. Rentals start around $100 a month for a 20ft and $200 a month for a 40ft, and we price multi-unit orders for operations running several sites.
+Do I need a permit to place a container in Bakersfield or Kern County?
It depends on zoning and duration. Containers on agricultural or industrial land are generally treated differently from permanent accessory structures on residential lots, and requirements differ between the City of Bakersfield and unincorporated Kern County. Check with the relevant planning department — we can supply placement documentation to support an application.
+Do you deliver to Taft, Delano, Shafter and Tehachapi?
Yes — Bakersfield and the wider Kern County area, including Oildale, Taft, Shafter, Wasco, Delano, Arvin, Lamont, Tehachapi, McFarland, and Buttonwillow. Send the delivery ZIP and we will price it.
