Where you can put a container in Los Angeles
This is the part of a Los Angeles container purchase that catches people out, so we will be blunt about it. Under LADBS Information Bulletin P/BC 2023-104, a cargo container for incidental storage may only sit on a lot that does not contain residential uses, and only where the Zoning Code already allows open storage. That is not a rule you can permit your way around at a house in the City of Los Angeles.

On a qualifying commercial or industrial lot, the process is a Use of Land Permit with a scaled plot plan showing buildings, parking and where the container goes. The count is generous compared with the county: one container per 5,000 square feet of lot area. Setbacks are 5 ft from a property line and 10 ft from another container or building, and no stacking.
Two things you may read elsewhere that are wrong for the City of Los Angeles. There is no 120 square foot shed exemption here — that threshold is a county and model-code rule, and the City building code contains no floor-area exemption for detached accessory structures at all. And the “14 days maximum” figure that circulates for containers in the street is not in the City code either; it comes from a county permit. Confirm your own situation with LADBS before you order.
Container delivery in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is 469 square miles and the delivery answer changes street by street. Three things decide it.
First, the 110. Caltrans bans commercial vehicles over 6,000 pounds on State Route 110, the Arroyo Seco Parkway, from the 101 all the way to Glenarm Street — a restriction dating to a 1953 City ordinance. That segment runs straight through Chinatown, Lincoln Heights, Cypress Park, Montecito Heights, Highland Park and Mount Washington, so a container truck serving those neighbourhoods comes in on the 5, the 2 or surface streets instead.

Second, city truck routes. LAMC 80.36.1 keeps vehicles over 6,000 pounds off designated signed streets, with an express exception for a truck making a delivery to a building on that street by direct route. That is the rule that lets us reach you; it also means we take the sensible way in, not the short way.
Third, hillside streets. The Baseline Hillside Ordinance works off a minimum 20-foot continuous paved roadway to the hillside boundary, and streets designated Substandard Hillside Limited Streets fall under it. If your address is on one of those, a 40 ft tilt-bed may not be the right delivery method — tell us the address and we will say so before delivery day rather than on it. High-cube containers at 9 ft 6 in also ride close to the 14-foot legal height ceiling, which matters under low branches and older bridges.
